I read this as a kid and it had a really significant effect on me and and it’s a big influence on my world view and I still think it’s the most beautiful and profound thing anyone’s ever said about beauty
Me too! This was such a big deal for me.
I mean, I get the intent here, but unless you’re somehow magically sure that the kid cannot possibly have OCD or any other mental illness involving obsessive thoughts then this is an awful message to give children. No, seriously. ”Ugly thoughts” are not fucking voluntary for some people.
And beyond that this is already gross with the physical ugliness motif (it literally posits “evil people are ugly” — no, they aren’t, and all of the bullies I had to deal with as a kid weren’t)and just ughhh.
I don’t know how to verbalize everything else that’s wrong with this but I’m pretty sure there’s more.
